Virgin Brazilian hair is commonly used in a sew-in as a protective style. What some people do not realize is that the hair extensions can suffer some of the same problems that natural hair does during the winter time. If you want your hair extensions to last, here are some winter hair care tips to put to use.
Deep Condition Your Hair
Just like your natural hair, the Brazilian hair extensions can dry out from exposure to cold air. To protect your extensions, you need to deep condition the hair once a week. The deep conditioner you use for the extensions needs to include fatty acids.
When applying the conditioner, start a couple of inches away from the scalp. Hair extensions tend to accumulate oil at the roots, which can cause the pores of your scalp to clog and hinder growth. Once the hair is covered in the conditioner, avoid putting it up into a ponytail. Leave it down until it is time to wash it out.
Steam the Hair
It is important to keep moisture in the hair extensions. The cold air will dry out your hair and leave it less manageable. Instead of dousing your hair with too many oils or water in an effort to keep it hydrated, steam it instead.
Steaming your hair is as simple as wearing a shower cap while taking a hot shower. You can also use a handheld steamer. You can find the steamer at your local beauty supply store.
Protect the Hair's Ends
The ends of your hair extensions can become brittle and start to break off when it is exposed to the cold air. To prevent this, there are a few things you should do on a regular basis.
One of the most important steps you can take is to trim and seal your ends. Trimming your ends helps to prevent split ends from occurring. You can use a heavy butter, such as shea butter, to seal the ends. The best time to seal the ends is after applying moisture. For instance, if you steam your hair, apply the shea butter immediately after.
A final measure you can take is to limit the exposure of your hair to cold air. If possible, style your hair extensions so that the ends are protected. Styles, such as a bun, are not only protective to the hair extensions, but also your natural hair.
