When you wish your hair was just a little bit longer but there is no way to get it to grow faster, you may consider hair extensions as a possible solution. While hair exensions can add the length and look you desire, they are not so easily added into your own hair. They require a lot of work to keep tidy too. Before you ask your beautician or cosmetologist to put hair extensions in with your own hair, you should know the following three things first.
The Current Health of Your Own Hair
Because true hair extensions are literally sewn into your own hair, your own hair has to be strong enough to support and hold onto the extensions. If you have dry, brittle hair that snaps and breaks every time you pull a comb or brush through it, you may be very surprised when your hair extensions start falling out because your hair was not healthy enough to hold them in. On the other hand, if you have very strong, break-resistant hair, hair extensions will not only work well for you, but they will also last longer and look nicer too.
Your Natural Color vs. Your Dyed Hair
Although you can request more exotic colors of hair extensions, such as neon pink or electric blue, you may want to avoid hair extensions that obviously do not match your natural hair color. For example, if your natural hair color is brown, but you dye it blond, then your blond hair extensions will be obviously fake to everyone that can spot your dark roots as your hair grows out. If you do not mind that people know you have extensions, then this is irrelevant.
However, many ladies and a few gents would prefer to get the most natural look from their extensions as they possibly can. Ergo, I may make better sense to either select extensions that match your roots or let your dyed hair grow out enough to cut it and then put in matching extensions.
Maintenance
To keep your extensions in place, you will need to return to the salon every few months, or when the extensions feel as though they are getting loose. As your hair grows, the extensions begin to move downward with your hair, losing their tight grip on your natural hair. The extensions may need to be moved, repositioned and/or reattached, and every return visit to the salon is an additional service cost. Still, if you decide that you really love your extensions, it may be worth all of the maintenance and the cost.
