Cosmetology School: What You Can Expect

Beauty & Fashion Blog

If you think cosmetology school is just about putting makeup on willing victims and cutting the hair of mannequins until someone hands you a certificate of completion, you've got a world of reality waiting for you. The truth is, cosmetology school can be just as demanding as any other kind of training and requires a lot of time and dedication on your part to complete successfully. Here are things you can expect when enrolling in cosmetology school.

Strict schedule

Like many other vocational schools, cosmetology school is a strict program that requires several months of hands-on training. You will need to dedicate yourself up to 8 hours a day of training in the classroom. This means you will have to work your family and work schedule around your classroom time, since every time you miss class you are losing valuable training you need.

Training kit

You will be required to purchase a training kit as part of your cosmetology training. The kit contains all the tools you need to complete the course, including mannequin doll heads, hair styling and cutting tools, and manicure and pedicure kits. These kits are typically offered to you once you have completed the classroom part of cosmetology school as you move on to the hands-on training, and every kit can cost anywhere from $1,200 to $2,500. You will be required to purchase a kit from your cosmetology school before you can move forward in the program.

Paid work

While the grueling hours of training and the hefty cost of a training kit may sound daunting, there will come a part of your cosmetology program where it really pays off- literally. As your training progresses and you begin to start cutting real hair, manicuring real nails, and putting makeup on live faces, you can actually get paid for the work you do in the form of tips. Part of your training is working on live subjects, and many cosmetology schools recruit the public to assist. They get cheaper facials, manicures, and haircuts for cheap, and you get to practice on real people under the supervision of your instructor. If your practice clients tip you, you get to keep that money. Getting paid while in school is a great perk of being in cosmetology.

Going to cosmetology school requires commitment to the training and certain tools that can be costly. In the end you can land yourself a great career doing something you love if you are willing to stick with the program.
